The work was to manage 13 British Council libraries scattered around India. Unusually, the Council had diplomatic status there. This, the best job of my life, was to last five years.

After the first year I started keeping a diary, to record the extraordinary goings-on that occurred on an almost daily basis. A quarter of a century later Ive revisited and reassessed those events in the light of time. Some were tragic and some hilarious – and all were fascinating. There are legions of books by the British in India and Ive written another. Why? It isnt a travel journal, despite some descriptions of shuttling round India for the job. It certainly isnt history, though references to the past are an unavoidable part of the story. Ive tried to show what it was like living and working in India for an extended period.

There are reflections on people – our servants, my Indian colleagues, visiting Brits and Americans, Brits who stayed on after partition, Indian writers, my dentist, the author of a quirky book on Indian English. There are observations on local issues like corruption, caste, the position of women, community strife, the role of gurus. Ive also described the scenes that followed Mrs Gandhis assassination.Of all the countries I visited with the British Council it is India that inspires the most warmth, and the Indian people I remember most fondly.

Awful things happen out there, and Ive described them too. But in spite of everything India is special- it is one of the great countries. With luck, five years of working with its citizens will have helped me to capture their elusive charm.
